?How to Become a Designer at Any Stage of Your Career

Not sure where to begin if you want to pursue a career in design? As a self-taught artist, I was late to the game and did a lot of experimenting before settling on design science.

The good news is that no matter where you are in your career or how unusual your experience may seem; it is entirely possible to find your place in the design world if it is something you aspire to.

Recognize the Designer Environment

Design isn't just about how anything looks; it's also about how it functions. Your first step in pursuing a career in design is to become familiar with the various positions available and to determine which type of designer you want to be. UI, UX, visual, interaction, motion, research: which do you want to pursue? If those titles make you nervous, it's time to learn more about them

Make, Make, Make: Perfection comes with practice

There used to be no one-stop shop for design education. There was no good centralized place for learning about design work when I first started digging into it, so I spent a lot of time—too much time—culling and curating tools. Fortunately for you, this has improved over time: you no longer need to create your own program. Since there are already a lot of nice ones out there Here are some of the best tools for teaching yourself to design

Design Tuts+: This is the Holy Grail of design tutorials, with everything from graphic design to Photoshop to web design to drawing theory covered

Gibbon: Gibbon has a ton of learning "playlists." As you embark on your own design-learning journey, brush up on storytelling and copywriting (yes, those are design skills, too!) or build and share your own collection of tools.

Good day, Designer: Remember how I said when I first started out that I spent so much time curating tools for learning design? Hello Designer, the product of my toil

?Consider yourself a designe

It doesn't happen overnight or through a single lesson to think like a designer. Understanding mental models, understanding key interaction flows, and recognizing design trends are all skills that take time to master. So, get started right away! The more you know about design and can chat about it, the larger your archive and repertoire of information would be to work through, return to, and learn from

What is the best way to learn how to think like a designer? Start keeping track of what you like and don't like by visiting places like patterns and lovely ui. What are the details that you are seeing and why? Then start delving into why you have those interests in the first place

If you're interested in pursuing a career in architecture, it's possible that you already have an instinct for a specific aesthetic

 Consult with other designers

Talking to other designers will teach you things you didn't know you didn't know. So, reach out to people in your network who work in the industry, or reach out to designers at companies you respect, and ask them for advice. Inquire as to whether they believe something is good, bad, or great. Take note of the details they pay attention to and figure out why. Find out what they're looking for and where they're looking

Understanding their (and your) thought processes will help you develop your own abilities, interact with others, and gain insight into the decisions that set rival products apart in the design world. Speaking with designers will also help you expand your vocabulary and begin to devise strategies for defending your (or someone else's) work
